Anxiety is experienced by almost everyone at some point throughout their lives. It can help an individual to be more successful sometimes, and it can be life debilitating for others.  Anxiety can be good for us at times, hence the ‘fight or flight’ theory. The time when anxiety becomes worrisome is when someone cannot handle simple tasks such as going to the grocery store, making a phone call, shopping in crowds, or eating in public.

Anxiety can destroy an individual’s life if it is not treated with therapy. There are many anti-anxiety medications on the market, but many people want to find another solution for anxiety. Some of the medications work for some people, and some do not. There are many side effects with anxiety medication such as drowsiness, rapid heart rate, confusion, fast paced breathing, dizziness, a zombie like state, and a loss of motor skills.

How to Treat Anxiety with Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been known to treat anxiety in a variety of ways.  Individuals who practice Chinese medicine believe that there is a very important connection between body and mind. They focus on how the energy flows throughout the body and how it affects the thought process, the mind, and the spirit. Chinese medicine states that when the body begins to feel any suffering of any kind whether mentally, or physically, that there is some sort of blockage of energy. This is where acupuncture comes in. Acupuncture is the procedure of inserting tiny thin needles into acupressure points to release the energy throughout the body to allow it to flow to necessary points. When the needles are inserted the body tends to relax and unwind. An individual who undergoes this type of therapy will only feel minor discomfort.

On the first visit, the individual with be asked a variety of questions about the condition, emotions, and personal lifestyle. The acupuncturist will determine what type of anxiety the individual is suffering from whether social anxiety, generalized anxiety, and a variety of others.  The practitioner will examine the client and design a unique therapy plan for them, targeting the organs that need to be addressed. After the first session of acupuncture the client will feel some sort of mental and physical relief. It is best to follow up with two sessions per week for about three to four weeks for ultimate results and relief.

Once the individual is feeling at his, or her best, the practitioner will request that they come in for a monthly visit to sustain the balance of energy within the body. Acupuncture is a fantastic alternative to the painful symptoms of anxiety. It can bring an individual back to where they were before the anxiety invaded their every day lives. No one should have to suffer alone with the devastating affects of anxiety. If left untreated it will only develop into more mental anguish and pain, and could lead to severe depression. It is a good idea for an individual to consult with their family doctor about acupuncture to begin with, and then if it sounds like a beneficial idea, find a licensed acupuncturist that specializes in anxiety.
