It is a medical condition that interferes with the growth and development of neurons.
It affects the way a person relates with others and they way they express themselves. Most of these characteristics begin at a very early age when a child is between the ages of 3-5 years old. Autism affects the coordination between the nerves and synapses and as a result it impairs the way the information is released to the brain. Autism is also believed to be caused by genes. This condition is also suspected to be caused by gene mutations but the research about it is not conclusive. Another school of thought also suggests that Autism may be caused by certain factors which normally occasion defects to both babies and the mother during delivery. The other idea revolves on the basis that the condition might be caused by certain environmental factors which include some dangerous metals.
Parents who are very keen during the early stages of the development of their children are able to notice the symptoms at the early stages; however, many of them do not realize it until very late when the child has grown and the symptoms are noticeable to everyone. It is very important that this disease is identified as early as possible and the necessary steps are put underway to contain the situation. Even though there is no recognized cure for this condition, research has shown that people who had suffered from this condition in the past have been able to recover and are now leading a normal life. There have been serious debates on the issue whether Autism is a disease or a disorder. Most people believe that it is a disorder and as a result its patients should be treated so. Another feature of people suffering from this condition is the change in the eating habits. Most children tend to eat less than their normal take and others just refuse to eat completely, parents therefore tend to be so stressed up with the whole situation and as a result there is no peace.
However, when these children advance in age, the said symptoms slowly disappear. They start interacting with their peers and start assuming the normal day to day life. When they finally become adults, there is a possibility that the condition will have healed completely. But there are few minor cases where the condition persists even in adulthood.
Treatment for Autism
Major aim of managing this condition is to ensure that normal family life is not ruined by it. It is also aimed at reducing the symptoms that might have built up if not well attended to.
Proper education is offered to the victims and family members so that they can know how to go about the issue. They are trained on how to manage the disease and the precautions to take in managing it. There are also some types of drugs that are administered to such patients to counter the effects of mutations. However, these drugs that are normally administered might have a very negative impact and side effects to the patient. Hence, caution should be exercised when administering them.
