Excessive belching can be quite annoying, especially if you are in a social setting. In medical terms, belching is known as eructation. It is when the digestive tract releases air and gas from the mouth. It is not a serious condition and everyone deals with it every now and then when they eat, or drink certain foods. If someone ever tells you they do not belch, or burp, this is plainly not true. Our digestive tract is sensitive to our diet, and belching happens from birth to old age. Belching can give us comfort to the abdomen as we may feel bloated as the gas, and air build up within. Even though it might provide comfort, no one wants to continuously belch, or burp. There are treatments for this type of situation and some remedies that may work to stop the excessive belching.

Remedies that can help someone stop excessive belching are:

•    Avoid carbonated drinks such as sodas
•    Try not to chew gum as it increases the air flow and gas production within the body
•    Try eating smaller meals and portions
•    Chew your food thoroughly and eat slower. (Use the fork method i.e. Take a bite and place your fork down on the plate and chew your food)
•    Avoid alcohol such as beer to stop excessive belching
•    Practice breathing properly i.e. inhale in and allow your abdomen to expand, exhale out and allow your abdomen to release the air gently
•    Stretch in the morning to reduce stress throughout the day
•    Dairy products such as milk can cause you to belch. Try to avoid having excessive amounts.
•    Watch what type of wheat or whole grain products you are eating. Some whole grain products can cause excessive belching.
•    Avoid drinking juices, sodas, and dairy drinks too fast. This can cause you too belch excessively and may even cause you to start hiccupping which can become painful.
•    Avoid wearing overly tight clothes
•    Avoid having too much sugar in your diet, desserts, and chocolates.
•    Avoid having excessive amounts of sprouts, onions, beans, cabbage, broccoli, and lentils. While they may be fantastic for other reasons, they can cause a build up of gas within the body.

It may not be possible to perform all of these remedies, or avoid such foods at all times, but you can reduce your intake to prevent from having excessive belching, or burping. It can be embarrassing if you are at a dinner party, with friends, or even on a first date. Try to pace yourself with your meals and drinks and take them in moderation. Anything in excess is bound to cause a reaction from within your body. It is better to stay on the safe side and treat your body fairly. Excessive belching can even begin to hurt the esophagus after a few bouts of it. This is something no one wants to experience, and the people around you might find it rude if they hear you belching, as it isn’t an acceptable manner in a social atmosphere.
