Home Remedies For Dry Scalp

Dry scalp is a common problem people from all over the world suffer from. It is usually the excessive use of medicines, shampoos and chemicals that lead to dry scalp. Though doctors may prescribe medication to treat a dry scalp, home remedies for dry scalp are better for treating the problem.

Though slow, dry scalp home remedies don’t have any side effects, and generally give better and longer lasting results.

  1. An effective home remedy dry scalp is heating some olive oil or any other herbal oil you use and massaging this oil onto your scalp till your scalp is saturated with oil. Then, using a wide toothed comb, comb your hair to spread the oils over your scalp. Massage to stimulate blood circulation and improve the production of sebum which is essential for hair growth.
  2. Peppermint oil also helps in treating dry scalp. All you have to do is add 3 drops of it to your shampoo, and massage it to your scalp before washing it off.
  3. Yoghurt also helps in treating dry scalp. All that has to be done is to rub yoghurt on your scalp and leave it on for ten minutes so that it is absorbed into your scalp. You can then rinse and wash it off using clean water.
  4. Another effective home remedy dry scalp worth trying is apple cider vinegar. You just have to dilute it and apply it onto your hair after shampooing and leave it on for ten minutes for best results. It is the vinegar’s antibacterial properties that help act on the bacterium or fungi on the hair, to moisturize and control your dry scalp problem.
  5. Besides using home remedies for dry scalp to treat your problem, stop bathing in hot water or using a heat blower as it only aggravates the condition. So instead of using hair blowers after bathing, let you wet hair dry naturally.
  6. Try mixing half a cup of milk with two teaspoons of honey and half a cup of extra virgin olive oil and apply it to your scalp for a few hours. Then wash it off using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.
  7. While shampooing your hair, avoid using hard water and alkaline soaps as they only aggravate a dry scalp. Use shampoos with fewer chemicals as too much chemicals only stop the production of sebum.

Most shampoos have sodium lauryl sulphate, which is also a key ingredient in liquid dish wash detergents that can degrease your scalp. If possible, it is better to get and use a specially designed dry scalp shampoo.

  1. Reduce or better still, stop drinking alcohol or coffee. They only dehydrate your skin and scalp and make your dry scalp condition much worse.

In addition to these dry scalp home remedies, include some vitamin B rich food in your diet as it increases melanin production, which gives your hair its color. Moreover, use a hat or scarf outdoors in daytime to protect your scalp from drying up. These preventive measures, and the many home remedies for dry scalp will help moisturize your scalp, and treat your dry scalp problem.
