Hordeolum is the medical term for stye (or sty). A pimple or abscess forms in the upper or lower eyelid to create a stye. A bacterial infection is generally the cause of the stye. The existing bacteria, which lies  upon the surface of the eyelid gets traps with dead skin cells inside the crypts along the ridge of the eyelid .

An external stye is a pimple next to an eyelash, they are generally short lived and self contained. The bump may become red, painful and swollen lasting several days before it erupts and then heals. An internal stye develops on the underside of the lid. The location of the internal stye makes it less likely to develop the whitehead bump. The red, painful swollen area may disappear as the bacterial infection dissipates. Sometimes a small cyst or nodule remains until it is opened and drained .

Causes of Styes

An obstruction of the opening of the oil glands in the eyelid is often the cause of the stye. Often they are infected by bacteria, such as Staphylococcal bacteria.
Other contributing factors to eye styes:

•    improper or incomplete removal of eye makeup
•    use of outdated or infected cosmetics
•    poor eyelid hygiene
•    inflammatory diseases of the eyelid such as blepharitis or meibornitis
•    hormonal changes or stress
•    Seborrhea  (excessive oil discharge)

Complications

Often the stye will heal on its own and will not affect vision or eye health but it is important to seek medical attention or to go to the emergency room if any of the following symptoms occur:
•    The eye is swollen shut or redness appears around the entire eye.
•    You have any change or disturbance in your vision.
•    Swelling lasts for more than three weeks.
•    The stye returns, especially in the same locations or bleeds.
•    Your eyelashes fall out or the stye is on the bottom eyelid, near the nose.
•    The white part of the eye becomes red.
•    Pus or thick discharge continues to drain from the eye.
•    You have a fever higher than 100.5 F.
•    You have excessive persistent tearing or significant pain
•    You have persistent redness of the surface of the eye.
•    You have swelling of the lymph nodes in your neck.
•    You experience double vision .

Tea

Warmor cold tea bags as compresses on the eyes to sooth and relief discomfort are a frequent home remedy.
