Development of Stretch Marks

Rapid growth of skin from pregnancy, weight gain or extreme weight loss can cause the skin to over stretch and form a scar known as a “stretch mark” or striae distensae.  The stretch mark occurs when the dermis, the elastic middle layer of the skin is consistently over stretched.  The abdominal area, thighs, upper arms and lower back are common locations for stretch marks .

Surgical Options

Dermabrasion and chemical peels or laser treatments may be used by a dermatologist to reduce the appearance of stretch marks.  The procedures are unlikely to be covered by insurance as it is considered a cosmetic procedure.

Natural Remedies for Stretch Marks

Inside Out

Diet can go along way to prevent the occurrence of stretch marks.  A healthy well balanced diet with strong nutritional value is essential for good skin quality.  A diet rich in zinc can prevent the appearance of stretch marks.  Nuts, oysters and fish are good sources of zinc.  Vitamins A and C (carrots, citrus fruits and milk) can also keep skin more elastic and reduce the stretch marks.  Protein rich foods such as eggs can help the skin prevent stretch marks.

Water is an essential ingredient in skin quality and in the prevention of stretch marks.  Water keeps skin soft and pliable.  Caffeine can increase the risk of stretch marks.  If you can’t give up coffee, tea or soda then match it drink for drink with water to keep skin looking good.

Exercise will keep the muscles toned and the dermis more flexible.  Exercise is considered one of the best methods to prevent stretch marks.

Topical Applications

There are a number of creams and lotions that are said to reduce the appearance of stretch marks.  Classic remedies include aloe vera gel and vitamin E oil.  Cocoa butter creams and vitamin K creams are also believed to reduce stretch marks.  Vitamin K can also be increased in the diet by increasing the intake of dark green, leafy vegetables.

Carrier or essential oils are common home remedies for stretch marks.  Sweet almond, avocado, lavender or jojoba oil are considered good folk remedies for stretch marks.

Cosmeceutical Science

The cosmetic industry has been developing for sometime a wide range of products to increase collagen and elastin in the skin.  Cosmeceutical creams, lotions and potions have been developed to alter the color, quality and elastin of the skin below the stretch mark or prevent the development in the case of pregnancy.  These may include active ingredient such as retinoids, glycolic acid or relastin which was designed for under eye care.

The best time to correct stretch marks is prior to, or in early stages of development of the stretch marks.  The adding of a hydrating cream in this early stage may prevent lasting scarring.
