So, you went out on a drinking spree, got drunk and the next morning you feel like your world is just about to end. Bouts of vomiting nausea, headaches, fatigue, hunger pangs and sore eyes are all you got. That is called a hangover, a thing you already know and most probably used to. But it is not really a surprise that you do not know what a hangover really is.
Well, simply put, it is a condition medically referred to as veisalgia. It is caused by excessive consumption of alcohol, or other drugs. Medical statistics indicate that the Average Joe can experience a hangover with as much as four to about five drinks. Still there are others who can suffer the effect with as little as just two or three drinks while strangely, there are those who can show resistance to hangover effects.
Excessive ethanol introduced to your body of course through alcohol is the main culprit behind hangovers. It causes a significant increase in your urine production which in turn dehydrates your body leading to a significant decrease of the essential body fluids especially in the brain. That is why 99 percent of all hangovers are often accompanied by headaches and lethargy. This should remind you the importance of dinking at least two or three glasses of water per every two beer bottles to keep yourself dehydrated and to make your hangovers bearable.
One of the best hangover remedies is just resting. Get more hours of sleep the morning after and when you wake you will feel better though you will of course, feel weak and dull. Take a cold shower then drink some string coffee. This will give you instant relief and reenergize you. It acts instantly and better than all the other home remedies for hangovers. Some people prefer yoghurt to coffee but still coffee stands out to be much better between the two. Just make sure that you drink the coffee cup after a cold shower so as you feel fresh and ready to begin your day normally. If the headache refuses to go, then take some pain relievers and relax till you feel better.
Drinking fresh fruit juices can also help to relieve hangover. But be careful not to use acidic fruit juices like lemonade or orange juice. Instead, go for apple juice. You can also eat a banana to help you gain more potassium that you may have lost when drinking alcohol.
Please keep in mind that there are some misconceptions as to some home remedies for hangovers. They may be extremely harmful and may even be life threatening if used continuously. Never take a steam bath or get in your sauna for hangover relief. Hot baths should be avoided as well. Steam baths, hot showers and saunas are dangerous as they can easily cause cardiac arrhythmias with the combination alcohol content still in your system and hyperthermia. Drinking more should also be avoided as that will only delay the hangover effects and symptoms but you will still have to face them after some time.
