Warts are local growths on the skin caused by the HPV or human papilomavirus. They are often considered to be contagious, but they are also known to affect only one area of the body without spreading to other body parts. They also may affect only one family member without being passed to others.

Common types of warts include Plantar warts which are found on the bottom of the foot.

The Plantar warts tend to be flat and cause a callus buildup that will need to be removed before treatment for the plantar warts. They are common in teenagers and are caused by HPV type 1.

Flat or plane warts may emerge on the face, legs or other parts of the body and may appear in large numbers.

Periungual warts are found around or under the nails. Filiform warts are usually long, single stalks which often appear on the face.

Genital warts are also caused by HPV, there are more than 40 types of HPV that can infect the anogenital tract and create genital warts.   In some cases, these genital warts may be precursors to cervical or penile cancers.

Natural healing options for wart removal may include food therapy. The natural healing experts believe that a diet rich in vitamin A and zinc will prevent or relieve warts. In some cases treatment of warts may include crushing a vitamin A capsule for topical application directly to the  wart; followed by castor oil application in the afternoon and lemon juice in the evening.

Consuming foods rich in Vitamin C or other citrus fruits are known to improve the immune system, natural experts recommend increasing Vitamin C intake to fight of the development of warts. A dose of 1 to 5 grams is often recommended as a preventative measure.

Mushrooms, such as shiitake, reishi and maitake are often recommended as natural wart removal options. Aloe Vera can be used in wart removal as a topical agent but also as an immune system builder.

Some natural healers recommend applying banana skins to the wart and sealing it with tape, repeated frequently until the wart disappears. Some recommend using duct tape to cover the wart or may combine duct tape with vinegar, tea tree oil or other natural extracts like milkweed or dandelion oil.

In the case of genital warts, not seeing the wart is not the same as eliminating the HPV type virus that has created them. Topical creams designed for genital warts may reduce or eliminate the visible appearance of genital warts, but it is important to see your doctor for long term solutions that will do more than remove the superficial appearance of genital warts.

Common medical treatments of warts include cauterization (burning) or cryosurgery (freezing) of the warts. The procedure is thought to increase the body’s natural immune system to stimulate healing and reduce the likelihood of the warts returning.

Western red cedar extracts (Thuja plicata or Thuja occidentalis) have also been used to stimulate CD4 cells and improve the immune systems ability to fight off the warts.
