Cancer is becoming more and more of ‘common’ disease these days and scientists are working around the clock to find more answers to this condition that kills hundreds of thousands of people every year. There have been links to the fact that nutrition might give us a fighting chance at surviving this horrible disease.

We have been told time and time again how important a healthy diet is for optimum health, but we do not have a guarantee we will not get an incurable disease. There are some steps we can take to help our body out in fighting against these conditions.

•    It is important to try and maintain your weight. Maintaining weight by obsessing over it day in day out is not a healthy way and could lead to other serious physical or mental issues. Obesity is still affecting the health of people from all countries around the world, some more than others. Lifestyle and our food intake is something to take seriously. Conditions that can be developed from obesity are diabetes, cancer, heart disease and high blood pressure. The best weight for you has to compliment your body frame and height.

•    Sample foods from all food groups. It is important to provide variety in your meals. The food groups are milk, vegetables, fruit, meat, meat substitutes and other protein, healthy fats and oils, and breads, grains and other starches. Variety in your meals will give you all the essentials minerals and vitamins for a healthy body defense.

•    Steer clear from sugar and sugar based products. Sugar can damage your skin, teeth, mood and weight. Sugar has only minor traces of vitamins and it will not help your body when you feel ill. *Take note that alcohol is full of sugar and minerals and vitamins are lost when drinking it.

•    A high sodium diet is not a healthy choice and can lead to high blood pressure, as well as other complications. High blood pressure can lead to strokes, heart problems, and kidney diseases. Avoid adding to much salt to food, or taste your food beforehand so you can stop the habit of pouring it on or into your meals.

•    Eat vegetables and fruit over fat based foods. Vegetables (especially the green leafy ones) and fruit can provide you with fibre which will keep your bowel movements regular and help eliminate toxins. Many vegetables and fruits have betacarotene, Vitamin C and A which is a body defense mechanism.

•    Fat comes in cholesterol, saturated and trans fat formations and can lead to weight gain, heart disease, and all kinds of cancers. Discover the good fats such as polysaturated and monosaturated fats.

•    Always drink water. Water is our life source and so many of us take advantage of it. If you get bored with water, try flavoured herbal drinks and teas.

These are not guaranteed nutritional pointers to stop Cancer, but the healthier and stronger your body is, the more it can fight off toxic diseases. If you have questions and concerns, always consult with your doctor.
