Depression affects millions of people around the world, and more women than men. Many women believe that they can handle it themselves and work through the depressed state. They might not believe a psychologist, psychiatrist, or therapist will be able to help them through the pain and suffering that depression can cause. Depression women can result in a variety of experiences such as the loss of a job, substance abuse, loss of enjoyment in regular activities, distancing from family and friends, and ultimately isolation.

Isolation can lead to depression and visa versa. When an individual becomes isolated their mind can begin to play tricks on them and the person might lose all social and life management skills. Doctors usually recommend to their patients that they should start an exercise program, eat healthy foods, attend support groups, and stay connected within a community. Depression in women can be caused by a poor diet, lack of sleep, stress, lack of exercise, and mostly a chemical imbalance within the brain.

Signs of depression can include a variety of experiences such as:

•    Lack of motivation and focus
•    A feeling of hopelessness and sadness
•    Insomnia
•    Excessive drinking or drugging
•    Excessive amount of sleep leading into the day
•    Unable to get out of bed
•    Body pain located mostly around the chest area
•    Constant crying and weeping
•    A state of chronic worry and anxiety
•    Isolation
•    Avoidance of social activities and the loss of desire in doing any activity
•    Decrease in sexual desire
•    Low self esteem and self worth
•    Suicidal thoughts and/or plans or attempts
•    Poor hygiene
•    Drug abuse

There are many links between women and depression. There are ways to alleviate depression in women and they do not all have to be drug based. While some medications such as anti-depressants can be prescribed for depression, there are alternative approaches such as natural depression treatment strategies that may help a woman get through the day.

•    Try eating healthier. Bananas and apples are known to improve mood and help alleviate negative feelings and sadness. Try eating a banana a day for two to three weeks to see how you feel. Include more healthy green vegetables into your diet, as well as fresh fruits, proteins and fiber.
•    Exercise is extremely important when treating women and depression. It doesn’t have to be extreme exercise, but a nice stroll, some fresh air, or a 20 minute jog on a treadmill can lighten up a person’s mood. Adrenaline can give us a high and keep us feeling good throughout the day. Women dealing with depression should incorporate exercise into their daily activities and make it a priority.
•    Take care of the appearance. Sometimes one of the signs of depression in women can lead to poor hygiene and lack of interest in their appearance. If a woman takes the time to do something nice for themselves each day they will feel a sense of self worth. Paint toenails, get a hair cut, have a hot bath, read a book, or go for a makeover. Whatever it is, it will help improve mood for the duration of time.

Of course, if the woman is depressed and is having suicidal thoughts, they should get help immediately. This can mean the difference between life and death. Many people do not survive through the symptoms of depression because they feel so hopeless. If you or someone you love is experiencing some of the symptoms above, make sure you get to a doctor immediately. Reach out for help from family and friends.
