Natural Treatments for Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety and depression commonly go hand in hand. The depressed person usually feels anxious, and the anxious person tends to feel depressed about their anxiety. While doctor’s still say there is no specific cause for anxiety, there are proven causes for depression such as various levels of serotonin, or dopamine. Both anxiety and depression can deeply affect the value of life for an individual, and can even cause a person to live a crippling lifestyle. People with anxiety are known to have ‘anxiety attacks’. The individuals’ environment and lifestyle can affect levels of anxiety, as well as stressful situations.

Symptoms of anxiety can include:

•    Chest pains and nausea
•    Headaches and/or migraines
•    Inability to sleep properly or insomnia
•    Constant feeling of nervousness and paranoia
•    Irritability and fatigue
•    Low levels of concentration and focus
•    Difficulty in being relaxed or calm
•    Difficulty breathing i.e. hyperventilation in an anxiety attack
•    Feeling that everyone is watching or judging them
•    Shaking
•    Constant worry over minor issues
•    Isolation

Symptoms of depression can include:

•    Lack of motivation
•    Over sleeping or insomnia
•    Loss of weight or weight gain
•    Constant crying
•    Suicidal thoughts
•    Feeling of numbness
•    Isolated behavior
•    Irritability
•    Negative thoughts and comments
•    Loss of appetite or over eating for comfort

There are some amazing remedies for anxiety and depression. Some of these remedies can be calming, and can relieve an individual of mental and physical anguish that they are experiencing at that time.

Anxiety can be relieved through a variety of remedies such as:

•    Meditation and yoga
•    Physical exercise such as walking, jogging, or running (cardio)
•    Aromatherapy oils such as sandalwood, jasmine and lavender
•    Taking vitamin B on a daily basis
•    Breathing properly i.e. Inhale and allow the abdomen to expand, exhale and allow the abdomen to release the air. (Try this over 10 times at your own pace to calm yourself and help you feel grounded)
•    Drink herbal teas, or a full glass of water slowly and relax your body
•    Have a nice warm soothing bath
•    Avoid caffeinated drinks, or food items as they increase anxiety in the body
•    Avoid alcohol when you feel anxious
•    If possible, try to quit, or avoid nicotine products


Depression can be relieved through a variety of remedies such as:

•    Taking vitamin D on a daily basis
•    Avoid alcohol as it acts as a suppressant to our emotions and can bring us down even further
•    Getting sunlight and fresh air if possible at least 20-30 minutes a day. If there is no sunlight, try being around bright lights for awhile
•    Eat an apple a day. Apples are known to be one of the best remedies for depression, and can also increase energy for the body because they have phosphorus, potassium, natural sugars and vitamin B
•    Try asparagus raw, or lightly cooked. Asparagus can help replenish nerves and the brain
•    Eat some cashews as they are full of vitamin B and riboflavin. Riboflavin rejuvenates the body, causing an individual to feel motivated, happier, and full of energy.
•    Eat leafy green vegetables, fish, eggs, whole grain foods, and natural fruits. Many of these food items have vast amounts of vitamin B which can improve an individual’s mood on a daily basis
