Women and menstruation is a commonly discussed topic amongst health professionals and the female public. Menstruation, also known as a period, is when a woman bleeds every month. It usually begins around the age of twelve or thirteen and it is known as a sign that an adolescent girl is becoming a young woman. The menstruation cycle usually occurs every 29 days and it can last anywhere up to seven days.

The first day of bleeding is considered the first day of the menstruation cycle. Menstration occurs after ovulation. Ovulation occurs approximately around the 14th day of the cycle and when the egg moves down the fallopian tubes for fertilization. When fertilization does not take place, the lining of the uterus sheds blood and the interior area.

Suffering from pre-menstrual syndrome? PMS is a condition that is experienced before the onset of a period and can include mood swings, depression, irritability, insomnia, irrational thinking, hot flashes and discomfort. There are natural PMS remedies such as the intake of vitamin B6 and vitamin E. These vitamins can be found in any health and vitamin supplement store or pharmacy.

Can pregnancy occur during menstruation? It is extremely rare for pregnancy to occur during menstruation, but it has happened before. There are days known as ‘safe’ days which are usually the first days of a woman’s period. Ask your doctor about pregnancy and menstruation before you make any rash decisions.

Symptoms of menstruation can include:

•    Cramping of the abdominals
•    Tension and pre-menstrual stress
•    Fatigue
•    Hot and cold sensitivity
•    Headaches
•    Discharge of blood

The best ways to survive menstruation, known as ‘a period’, is to try taking care of the body by eating a regular diet of fiber, fruits and vegetables. Drink a lot of water and eliminate salt during this time. Salt only makes us retain water and feel even more bloated. Exercise if the cramping is not too bad and go for long walks in the fresh air, or a run on a treadmill. Have a warm bath to calm any anxiety, or pain and cramping in the abdomen. If you have severe pain from your menstruation cycle then you might be suffering from dysmenorrhea and this should be discussed with the doctor.

Natural home remedies for cramps and menstruation include:

•    Vitamins and minerals such as calcium, vitamin B, vitamin E, zinc and magnesium.
•    Chamomile can reduce cramps and also allow for a good nights rest.
•    Use a heating pad to reduce the pain in the abdomen.
•    Ginger root tea can alleviate pain.

If you have concerns over women and menstruation, or you want to know how to talk about it with your daughter, then ask your doctor for advice. They will be able to direct you on how to find the best resources for menstruation health and how to discuss it with loved ones.
