The first thing you need to do is to trim your toe nails straight across the top rather than trying to round them out. For the rough areas that remain, always use a file to make them smooth. Then war nice fitting shoes or just open shoes. Never put on shoes that can put pressure on the tops or sides of your toes. The toe box of your shoes should be long enough to accommodate your longest toe and wide enough to keep all your toes from being squeezed together. The shoes should also be high enough to allow wiggling of your toes when you have the shoes on.
One of the best home remedies in this case would be Epsom. Simply soak your foot with the infested toe in in a basin of hot water and a palm full of Epsom salt. Do this as many times as you can in a day. The infection will soon fade away. For faster relief and quick healing, you can add the Epsom salt directly over the infected toe nail. This will increase magnesium sulphate concentration on the toe nail and will quicken the healing process.
Garlic/vinegar is yet another perfect home treatment. All you need to do is to soak the foot with the infected toe in warm vinegar water for 15 to 20 minutes two or three times daily till the infection cools. Then get some crushed garlic, put it in a gauze and tape it around the toe for two days. When you remove the tape, the infection will have disappeared.
