When a filling is lost, it is important to contact your dentist for a replacement as soon as you can. The pain is always unbearable since the tooth interior which is very sensitive is exposed. The nerves within the tooth may then be affected by cold, pressure, impacted food or other stimuli, or in some cases nothing at all, resulting in a terrible toothache. Try rinsing with warm water to loosen any foreign object that may be causing the pain. Then keep off hard foods that can leave debris in the hole left by the lost filling. Topical anesthetics, such as eugenol, are available over the counter at most health stores.
