Swollen upper eyelids are a sign of various medical conditions related to the eye and eyelids such as blepharitis, conjunctivitis or contact dermatitis and the best way to prevent developing such a symptom is to follow a proper face and hands hygiene. Never leave make up on during sleep and avoid rubbing the eyes with unwashed fingers or dirty handkerchiefs. Such habits will only make matters worse. The swollen eyelids are usually a result of overgrowths of bacteria that normally live on the skin and keeping the face and hands clean is the best someone could do in order to avoid having swollen upper eyelids.
