Well, your son licks his lips to respond to the dryness there. It is good that you have noted this on time and can do something to prevent the lip licking to develop into a habit even when there is nothing to respond to on the lips.
Fortunately, there is a perfect home remedy for this condition. You therefore should not worry at all that the condition may develop into anything worse. Keep the corners of his mouth dry and the lips from chapping. This can be done by using a lip balm or salve. The balm will protect you sons mouth from bacteria and will also shield the lips from excess moisture.
Lip burning or dry lips may also be as a result of weather changes. Use a humidifier during winter and a sunblock balm during summer. They will prevent dry lips which normally lead to excessive lip leaking which in turn leads to lip burning.
Should you resort to any of the tropical treatments or oral antibiotics that are available, you certainly will notice the effect of such treatments. They produce a burning sensation for a while. The sensation will slowly die and the lips should start to positively respond to the treatment.
If his condition worsens, be sure to see a doctor. The burnings could be side effects of the medications your son could be under.
