If you have a sore throat caused by bacteria, then antibiotics will work for you. If in the other hand your sore throat is caused by a virus, then antibiotics are not the perfect solution for you. Most sore throats heal after three of four days. It is therefore not a must that you use antibiotics or any other form of treatment to get rid of the sore throat. This should only be done if the sore throat seems to be stubborn. One thing you have to keep in mind is that while using antibiotic, you will realize that your throat clears up before you finish the whole course. Where this happens, continue taking the antibiotics until they are over. This will greatly reduce the risk in the community of bacteria becoming resistant to the antibiotics. The best antibiotics for sore throats are penicillin, amoxylin and cephalexin. As already said, the antibiotics will only work if the sore throat is caused by bacterial infections. They never work of for sore throats caused by allergies or viral infections such as colds. One thing about antibiotics and their use is that they are only given immediately a strep infection is confirmed by a rapid strep test. If you test positive, you will be given antibiotics to relieve the symptoms of a strep throat. This should only be 48-72 hours after symptoms begin. Waiting for the sore throat to heal by itself is the best solution of getting rid of sore throats. Overuse of antibiotics may render them ineffective or may bring about allergic reactions such as nausea.
