Alternate treatments  Submitted by karen
I would have to disagree with the post. Passing a kidney stone through urine is not the only form of treatment. There are actually three different types of procedures. A ureteroscopy is when they enter your bladder and kidney (depending where the stone is located) and remove it with just a stone basket or they use a laser to break the stone up and remove it then. An ESWL is a machine that uses shocks to break up the stone inside of the body and then it is removed from your body with your urine. A PNL ( percutaneous nephrolithotomy) is done when the stone is too big and they need to make an incision on your back and remove the stone. All of these procedures are done under anesthesia. It is always a good thing to investigate on which procedure is needed and which is best.
