By the end of the 20th century, almost every household in North America had at least heard the word "yoga". Before then, yoga was only known and practiced in certain small circles of western civilization, an amazing statistic considering yoga has been practiced in the east for thousands of years.
The most recent wave of yoga popularity has come from what is called Bikram Yoga, or hot yoga classes. Besides this patented yogic technique, there are many other forms and styles of yoga - and we have created some articles and explanations for many of these type (see left navigation). Among them are Iyengar yoga, founded by B. K. S. Iyengar in the first half of the 20th century, Kriya yoga, an ancient form of yoga re popularized by the famous book 'Autobiography of a Yogi' (Paramhansa Yogananda), and Ashtanga yoga, based of the Yoga Sutras (Patanjali).
As yoga continues to grow in popularity, other forms of eastern medicinal and healing techniques become more mainstream, helping us to explore healing from a global perpective. Yoga, along with other meditative techniques, can help a person become balanced body, mind and spirit, allowing them to heal themselves find inner peace.
